July Birth Flower

delphinium

/delˈfinēəm/

noun

:a popular garden plant of the buttercup family that bears tall spikes of blue flowers

:any of numerous plants of the genus Delphinium, especially any of various tall, cultivated species having usually blue, pink, or white flowers

Its July and July's birth flower is one of my favorites! Delphinium are dramatic and eye catching. They are used widely as cut flowers but also grown in gardens across the world. Delphinium represent fickleness, joyfulness and sweetness.

They are known for being large and showy. As you can see from the pictures below they have potential of growing 8 feet tall!

Many gardeners get impatient with Delphiniums because they can sometimes be a challenge. They require moist, cool summers and do not fare well in hot and dry weather. BUT they also dislike sudden wind or rain. Picky Picky... but with a bit of TLC and persistence you can be an expert and grow the many different varieties of Delphimium right here in your Minnesota garden.

Delphinium is popular in the cut flower industry because of their color. There are not many flowers that grow a true blue color. Because of this, they are a highly sought after crop and can be a bit spendy depending of the time of year you are buying them. Many farmers markets will have fresh Delphinium during the summer and especially this time of year. So check your local farmers market and flower shops for this gem, you wont be disapointed!

Happy Birthday to all my friends and family with a birthday in July Birthday. Enjoy these summer days, there aren't many left!

Cheers!
