May Birth Flower
lil·y of the val·ley
/ˈlilē əv T͟Hə ˈvalē/
noun
:a widely cultivated European plant of the lily family, with broad leaves and arching stems of fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers.
:a small plant related to the lilies that has usually two leaves and a stalk of fragrant flowers shaped like bells
Just as petite and cute as its name, this classic garden flower, Lily of the Valley, represents the May Birth Flower. In the month of May your garden really begins to flourish and it begins to feel a bit like summer again. Technically speaking, Lily of the Valley is not a lily at all, the plant belongs to the botanical family Ruscaceae, not the Liliaceae (lily family). Most of them are low growing plants that can only reach about 8 inches tall.
This woodland wild flower pops up all over the state of Minnesota but is considered native to Europe. The Lily of the Valley symbolizes purity, sweetness and humility. Its fragrance is striking and beautiful. It really does smell like a typical sweet old lady's perfume ... in a good way :) They bloom in early spring (May/June) but the bloom time only lasts for a few short weeks.
I hope everyone with a May Birthday enjoyed their special day! Its finally warming up and soon spring will be wiped away by summer :) Ready for the next (and best) season?
Cheers!
